Chairperson, United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child

Luis Pedernera is the current Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. He worked with numerous social organisations addressing children’s rights, including the World Organization Against Torture Project in Uruguay, the Committee on the Rights of the Child Uruguay and the Coordinating Council of the Latin American and Caribbean Network for the rights of children and adolescents (REDLAMYC). He is also Head of the Rights of the Child and Adolescence Area at the Institute of Legal and Social Studies of Uruguay, and a consultant on children’s rights issues for civil sector organisations.

As Coordinator in Uruguay for the Organisation Against Torture project, he worked to implement international standards to protect children deprived of liberty from torture and ill-treatment in Benin, Uruguay and Philippines. He also served as a member of the National Honorary and Advisory Council on Children and Adolescents, created by the Code on Children and Adolescents. Pedernera has focused on the rights of children in the justice system and published "Gritos Amargos", in "Next steps towards a Human Rights prison policy” in Uruguay. Pedernera is a graduate of the University of the Republic, Uruguay.
